Shawnna Kusky: kick the fattening dressings to the curb and in favor of a balsamic vinaigrette spritzer
Seema Hosfeld: First off well done for recognising that you need to lose weight and for taking responsibility for that.It will take work but if you make a real effort you should start to see a change quite quickly. It will take time though because you have a quite a lot of weight to lose but try not to get disheartened or seduced by promises of miracle products and easy ways out. They are tempting but they don't work, and certainly not long term because you really need to change your lifestyle and your attitude to food, exercise and your own body. I think keeping a diary would be a really good way to stay on track and if you have a bad day being able to see what you've already achieved would really help you keep inspired. The two basic elements of weight-loss are food and exercise.Try to avoid eating junk-food, processed food and ready meals. It is much healthier t! o cook from scratch wherever possible and it can be really fun too to experiment with different flavours and ethnic cuisines. The Weight Watchers website has some good recipes and I've found some of their recipe books to be excellent (though those were older books so I don't know if the ones out at the moment are as good.) You need to cut back on fat, particularly saturated fat and sugar and eat a balance of carbohydrates, protein and vegetables. Try to eat complex carbohydrates, for example wholemeal rather than white bread, which release energy more slowly and contain more fibre. Lean protein can come from well trimmed cuts of unprocessed meat which could be grilled or roasted or from eggs, beans and lentils, tofu. Dairy products also contain protein as well as calcium but most cheese contains a lot of fat so try to use less by choosing strongly flavoured cheese which can be grated to make it go further. I sometimes mix grated mature cheddar with cottage cheese to use wit! h salad in a sandwich for my lunch. Go for semi-skimmed milk r! ather than full fat and also low fat yoghurt which can be really useful in giving dishes a creamy texture without loads of fat and calories. Try to make vegetables the main-stay of your diet as they are low in calories and contain loads of vitamins and minerals that help make your body healthier so that you feel more positive and energetic. Fruit is a good snack or pudding rather than biscuits or cake. You also need to exercise careful portion control. I find it helpful to use plates which have a proper 1" raised rim so you only have a 10" diameter area for food in the centre. A lot of more modern design plates are much flatter without much of a lip so that healthy portion sizes look quite stingy and it encourages you to over-eat. You can use flavour enhancers like herbs, spices, lemon juice and lemon zest to give your food plenty of flavour without all the fat and sugar. Try to take the time to really enjoy the flavours and textures of the food that you eat. Developing an ! appreciation for quality over quantity is a good habit and eating slower will give you time to feel full. If you often eat when you are not really hungry but just because you are bored or have become used to the hand to mouth action try drinking a sugar-free drink as a substitute. Ideally that should mean a drink that isn't sweet like tea or herbal tea with no sugar or water with a squeeze of lemon rather that some kind of pop with artificial sweetener because you need to try to develop a less sweet palate. Again if you often comfort eat you need to try to think of alternate strategies like a hot bubble bath or squeezing a soft toy.Part two is exercise. It doesn't really matter what sort, any exercise will help you loose weight. What does matter is that you do regular exercise and keep it up. The trick is to find forms of exercise you enjoy doing. Joining clubs or classes, like aerobics, yoga, martial arts or dance, where you exercise with other people can also help motivat! e you. I know I could never motivate myself to go to a gym but swimming! , cycling, dancing and trampolining are all things I really enjoy doing. It is really satisfying to be getting better at something and I like trampolining because I can learn new skills which gives me a sense of achievement. I think being involved in exercise and sport can really improve your attitude towards your own body because you learn what an amazing tool it is for doing all these different activities and I think that makes you feel more respect and more positive towards it. As well as burning calories exercise releases endorphins that make you feel more up-beat and also increases you metabolism which leads to faster weight loss. You can work exercise into your day by walking or cycling for short journeys and choosing the stairs over the lift.Be accepting that this is going to require major changes and take time. To keep focus when your ideal weight seems a long way away break it down into a series of smaller challenges and try think about the positive impacts a healt! hier weight can have on your life....Show more
