Cyndy Grimes: Generally, the amount listed is for an average size washer and most home washing machines now have large drums so it would be ok to add a bit more. Be careful not to use too much or it could lather and ooze out of the washer (thinking about the episode of the brady bunch) or it could leave a residue inside your washer and shorten it's lifespan. Keep in mind that today's commercial detergents are mostly chemicals and lathering agents so you won't have the "feel" of real soap when you use them. If you need this feeling, you may want to make your own. It is safer for the environment, much cheaper than commercial detergents and it will give you the clean feeling you want because it actually uses soap. I would suggest that whether you add more detergent to the washer or begin making your own, you begin using vinegar in the Downy ball (I promise your clothes won't smell) or every week or so, you run one cycle empty with about 4 cups of vinegar. This will clea! r out any soap residue from your machine and tubing. Let me know if you would like my laundry soap recipe - I'd be happy to share it with you!Hope that helps!...Show more

Jacinta Moitoso: I always use quite a bit less than it calls for. If you have very hard water, or very soiled items, you may need to use more.
